Artist's Statement

Lindsey Mills

The art of the photograph- the thrill of capturing a perfect moment in time. I’ve been chasing that high for almost 2 decades, from an awkward teen with a 35mm film camera and a passion for the darkroom. I was the artsy girl with the camcorder directing a remake of the Blair Witch Project while the other kids were holding hands in the dark. Skipping class to snap photos of the cheerleaders for the yearbook was the highlight of my senior year, so I enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design to study the craft of photography & film-making.

In the achingly beautiful city of Savannah GA, I started working for local portrait photographers. I shot my first wedding, an elopement, for $100 and a case of beer. I didn't know what to expect walking into the city park square, the late afternoon sun piercing through the trees and Spanish moss. Meeting Hilary & James, young, nervous and madly in love, I got swept up into the moment. The secondhand dopamine buzz was as addictive as love itself.

Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans...

As a poor college student I stumbled into a job as a cake decorator. I fell in and out of love with a southern painter, then a Star Wars cosplayer (we all make questionable decisions when we're young?). When I finally completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, I returned to my home state of New Jersey to build a life & a business. I met a cute web developer and convinced him to build me a free website, 5 years later we were married (with 2 kids to walk us down the aisle). I spent the next few years navigating motherhood while picking up wedding photography gigs on Craigslist.

My babies became the favorite subjects of my photos and increasingly, videos. Home movies have been pivotal in documenting my life for as long as I can remember. My parents purchased a chunky vhs camcorder in 1985 and faithfully recorded a few minutes of tape at every holiday, family party and impromptu dance performance, saving hours of memories of moments that would otherwise be forgotten. This is my inspiration riding waves of nostalgia through my own home movies and wedding films, my vision coming together when I discovered Super 8 film was back in production by Kodak. What can I say, I’m a sucker for film grain & warm fuzzy feelings. I do cry at weddings (just a little).

Today I am proud to be a full-time independent wedding photographer & film maker. I’m a creative spirit, hopeless romantic, and visual storyteller. My variety of talents include cake decorating, wheel-thrown pottery, and convincing my kids to go bed early so I can shamelessly watch adult cartoons. I find the most joy in between beautiful family chaos and quiet moments alone.
